WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
Beatty, Susan Free Introduction to Home Education (G)
Effective Bible Teaching (G) Syllabus Pages
God commanded parents and teachers to teach children His Word, and it is the most important subject for their lives. Today this is the most neglected subject. This Teaching Bible "how-to" workshop, including outlines, teaching order, and daily lesson plans, can be for non-readers up to and including adults. Collard, Sharon History Alive (G) Syllabus Pages History comes alive; it becomes real and relational, when studied through "living" books- original sources, biographies, and historical fiction. Learn the benefits of using living books to teach history; how to find and use living books; and helpful tips for creating a wonderful history notebook. Families Reading Are Families Growing: The Value of Reading Aloud with Our Children (G) Syllabus Pages Take a look at the benefits of reading aloud for academic, family, and character development. Get help evaluating the reading needs of preschoolers through teens. Reading aloud tips including what to read, how to read it, and where to find it, as well as stocking a home library inexpensively. Clark, Tom Teen Math: What to Teach and How to Teach It (J/H) Syllabus Pages Are you struggling with teaching math to your teenagers? Do the words "ALGEBRA" and "GEOMETRY" strike fear in the hearts of your homeschool family? In this workshop, Tom Clark, founder of VideoText Interactive, and author of "Algebra: A Complete Course", and "Geometry: A Complete Course", will explore with you, sometimes humorously, the reasons that instruction can be difficult and will then get serious about WHY teenagers need higher level math. If you or your students have ever asked, "When are we going to use this Algebra stuff?", then this workshop is for you! Teaching Math as a Language (G) Syllabus Pages Did you know that Mathematics has parts of speech and sentence structure, just as does any spoken language? Did you know that understanding the "grammar" of Mathematics greatly helps student understanding of problem-solving and applications? In this workshop, Tom Clark, founder of VideoText Interactive, and author of "Algebra: A Complete Course", and "Geometry: A Complete Course", clearly and humorously demonstrates this quality of mathematical language. At last, you will truly understand the roles of all types of mathematical symbols, and you will see how easy it is to translate between Mathematics and English, enabling you to improve your understanding, and teaching, of "story problems", at all levels. Eldridge, DeeDee Learning Styles (G) Syllabus Pages Each individual person learns primarily from one style, while not excluding the others -- and as we learn which style each of our children prefers, they will enjoy learning and you will enjoy teaching them more. Through identifying their learning style, you will be able to capitalize on their strengths and improve their self-advocacy skills. We will discuss how to discover those styles in yourself and your children, as well as how to style your mode of teaching to facilitate the best way for them to absorb and retain what they are taught without designing different curriculum for each child. Character Training, the Cornerstone of Christian Education (G) Syllabus Pages "Character" -- a word thrown about much in Christian circles - especially in home-educating venues. We must be careful however, not to let it simply become a subject to teach rather than a lifestyle. There really is no greater reason to teach our children at home but to train their characters before the Lord - to learn how to listen to the voice of the Holy Sprit and obey His prompting in every area of life. EVERYTHING else is secondary. We will discuss what character training means in a practical sense in our everyday lives, and how we can make it more than just a curriculum of reading and filling in the blanks. Resting in the Lord as We Teach (G) This is not another workshop on planning and organization. While those things are important, we must start with our state of mind and how to take care of ourselves as home-educating moms so that we can be and do all the things we are called to. The Word of God admonishes us to "love our neighbor as ourselves” a minimum of eight times in the New Testament. We will discuss the meaning of this command and how to keep a balance in practical ways so that "burn out" and "stress" are never heard out of our mouths or spoken about us. Practical insight and tips on keeping "all things decent and in order" will be discussed (and we are not just talking about house-keeping). Geib, Chuck and Pam Unit Studies (G) Syllabus Pages Unit studies has become a common term in homeschooling circles. This workshop will focus on what a unit study is and how it can be implemented in our homes. Homeschooling Against All Odds (G) Syllabus Pages Have you ever wondered if you are the only homeschooling family who has problems that seem catastrophic and insurmountable? Have you ever wondered why no one else ever mentions that they, too, have problems and how they have overcome them? This workshop will cover some basic problems facing home educators; using Scripture as a guideline, we will explore how to overcome the difficulties. Record Keeping (B/G) Syllabus Pages What records are a must for the private home educator? Where do I find these records? How do I keep them? What other records are valuable to have on hand? What is a philosophy of education? How do I write my own? All of these questions as well as some practical ideas on how to set realistic goals for each school year will be discussed in this workshop. Haller, Debe Challenge of Raising Cain (E) Syllabus Pages Debe shares practical ways to teach children responsibility and obedience. She gives tips on how to work together as a family in order to be consistent with household duties and still homeschool children who are demanding, difficult to motivate, lack concentration skills, and have poor impulse control. Come learn how to reduce stress, frustration, and anger. Joy in homeschooling is possible. Ten Foolish Things Homeschoolers Do to Mess Up Their Lives (W) Syllabus Pages Proverbs 14:1 tells us that the wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down. Once we ask God for the courage to take responsibility for our own problems, the possibilities for personal growth and joy are limitless. Debe Haller will share the top ten things she has learned from her own experience of more than 20 years of homeschooling four children, by watching others, and from the Word of God. Mrs. Mom: Agonized or Organized? (W) Syllabus Pages Debe Haller, a leader in home education for 20 years, will share biblical principles and practical applications. She will encourage, challenge, and teach proven practical tips to help parents understand their approach to teaching, determine what they want to achieve, establish priorities, implement a plan to reach goals, determine paperwork options, organize the space, and recognize God as the source of all. Hanson, Roy Free Introduction to Home Education (G) Introduction to Home Education. Legislative Update (G) The current legislative battles are discussed, including what action is necessary. Harrington, Mary Teach Latin When You Don't Know It (G) Syllabus Pages Latin, the base of the English language, is the key to a good English vocabulary and to good grammar. It is possible to teach Latin in an interesting way and to learn as you go. In this seminar, we will use several books to show foolproof methods for covering this very important basic subject for the teacher who has no prior knowledge of Latin. Hensley, Sharon Understanding Learning Differences, Part I (LD) Syllabus Pages Often when children are having trouble with academics, it is hard to know whether the child is lazy or learning disabled. We will discuss learning differences and difficulties which are NOT disabilities, as well as learn what true learning disabilities are and how they impact learning. More severe learning problems such as slow learning, mental retardation, and autism will be touched on as to how these disabilities differ from learning disabilities. Understanding Learning Differences, Part II (LD) Syllabus Pages Explore how specific perceptual and processing weaknesses impact learning. The difference between remedial and compensation approaches will be discussed as well as teaching methods, curriculum, and modifications that best help children who are struggling. Understanding Learning Differences, Part III (LD) Syllabus Pages This session wraps up the discussion on how learning difficulties impact learning and allows the audience to ask questions about the specific difficulties their children are having and get some practical ideas and resources.
