Meet Our Speakers

Andrew Pudewa

Andrew Pudewa

Andrew Pudewa is the founder and director of the Institute for Excellence in Writing. Traveling and speaking around the world, he addresses issues related to teaching, writing, thinking, spelling, and music with clarity, insight, practical experience, and humor. His seminars have helped transform many a reluctant writer and have equipped educators with powerful tools to improve students’ skills. He and his wife, Robin, have homeschooled their seven children and are now grandparents of fifteen, making their home in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Nathan Pierce

Nathan Pierce

Nathan began working at Family Protection Ministries (FPM) in 2002 to protect private homeschooling in California. He was homeschooled himself from kindergarten through high school and received a B.A. in Political Studies from The Master’s University. Currently he serves as Executive Director and Legislative Liaison for FPM. He works behind the scenes at the State Capitol, meeting with legislators to advocate on behalf of homeschoolers. He and his wife Betsy are actively involved in their church and homeschool their own 8 children.

Jenny Vandever

Jenny Vandever

Jenny Vandever, a second-generation homeschooler, has led in an array of homeschool-focused ministries over the past decade, with a focus toward building Christ-centered community. Jenny is married to Andrew Vandever (CHEA Board of Directors), who is her ideal Amazing Race partner and main cheerleader as she teaches their girls to write persuasive essays, multiply exponents, and locate Paraguay on a map.

Alysia Watkins

Alysia Watkins

Alysia Watkins enjoys serving on the board of her local homeschool support group and is in the midst of homeschooling her own three children. After being homeschooled herself, she used the independence in learning it taught her and earned a personalized masters degree in engineering with parallel studies in psychology, innovation, and education. Though originally a Midwest girl, she’s happy to now call California home and paints whenever she can.

Workshops

Cultivating Language Arts – Preschool through High School, Andrew Pudewa
Listening and reading well, speaking and writing clearly, and thinking and debating effectively are abilities that most parents hope to cultivate in their children. With that goal in mind, Andrew Pudewa explores various environments and activities that accelerate the development of these language skills, beginning with the youngest students and continuing into the high school years.

Conquering Corrupt Culture by Raising Christian Communicators, Andrew Pudewa
Today, many of us have an intuitive sense that major changes are coming, that soon our world may be very different in ways not necessarily convenient or comfortable. But at the same time, we must wake up each day and live as though things will continue on pretty much as they are. Resolving this cognitive dissonance requires that we carefully contemplate our circumstances because we truly are in a cultural war, fighting the “non-gospel” of aesthetic and moral relativism on three fronts – personal, familial, and social. What should our priorities be, and how can we prepare our children to be “culture warriors?”

For Such a Time as This, Jenny Vandever / Alysia Watkins
While it may seem impossible to raise children according to the Word of God, you have been uniquely appointed by Him to do just that. Experienced homeschool moms will share their experiences as they have discipled and taught their children in a world that is increasingly turning its back on God.

Homeschool Freedom: What It Is and Why It’s Important to Protect It, Nathan Pierce
In this session, Nathan talks about the history of homeschool freedom in California, the differences between Christian and non-Christian education, and why that matters in the battle of freedom. He will cover various homeschool options in California and the levels of freedom in each, finishing with an encouraging charge to trust God for His provision as you embrace the call to honor God with your children’s education.
